2019 Student Essay Contest

ELIGIBILITY:

Students who are eligible for the 2019 SSW Essay Contest are:

  • Currently in grades 6-12
  • Currently enrolled in a school located on the South Side OR currently live on the South Side

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Please include the following information:

  • Name (and pronouns)
  • School Name & Grade
  • Address
  • Email
  • Phone Number
  • Twitter/Social Media handles (if applicable)

 

All essays should respond in some way to the essay contest theme:

DEAR MAYOR LIGHTFOOT

On May 20th, 2019, Lori Lightfoot will be inaugurated as Chicago’s next mayor. What are the things you want Mayor Lightfoot to know and understand about your neighborhood? What stories and memories about the people and places in your community best exemplify the future of Chicago you want to see?

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Please email all submissions by the deadline to rachel.kim@southsideweekly.com with the subject line “2019 SSW ESSAY CONTEST SUBMISSION: [Your Name]”

All submissions must be in .docx format or attached as a Google Doc file.

Essays should range from 500-1500 words and have a title.

Three student essays will be chosen as winners to have their essays printed in the June 19, 2019 issue of the South Side Weekly, and will receive additional Weekly swag.
