Contribute to the Weekly

How to pitch a story, start writing, take photos, & more for the Weekly

The South Side Weekly is run by an all-volunteer staff, and welcomes contributions and participation from people across the South Side. Want to get involved?

***We’re seeking a music co-editor, an education co-editor, and contributing editors!***

(N.B. Editors can be reached individually by email at firstname.lastname@southsideweekly.com)

PITCH A STORY: Think there’s a story out there we should cover, or a story you want to write yourself? We would love to hear it! You can email us at pitch@southsideweekly.com or stop by the Public Newsroom for “Pitching Hour” (4pm-6pm, every Thursday in our office).

We also accept submissions of literature and opinion writing at submissions@southsideweekly.com.

WRITE: We pitch out stories and calendar blurbs every week to our general listserv.

You can request to receive these emails by filling out this form, or emailing contribute@southsideweekly.com.

The quickest way to get started writing is to write a calendar blurb. The calendar of South Side events is a crucial part of our publication, and writing a short 30-40 word blurb about an event is a fast and super helpful way to contribute to the Weekly and get your name in the paper. Watch out for the calendar email every week.

Our managing editors (Julia Aizuss and Andrew Koski) will send out a document full of pitches. If you’re interested in writing one, you’ll respond to the email and let them know. If it’s your first time writing for us, you might want to include a bit of information about your journalism experience (not required).

VISUALS: Are you into photography, illustration, digital art, data visualization, or any kind of visual art? Contact our visuals editor, Ellen Hao. We also publish an annual Comics issue in the summer.

FACT-CHECK: If you’d like to join our fact-checking team, contact our fact-checking coordinator, Adam Przybyl, about any upcoming fact-checking trainings.

EDIT: If you’re interested in editing for the South Side Weekly, join our listserv or keep an eye on this page, and we will send out calls for applications to editing positions as they become available. However, if you’d like to know more about what a Weekly editor does, feel free to email contribute@southsideweekly.com and let us know you’re interested.
