As the Layout Editor at South Side Media Works, you will work across the organization to assist the South Side Weekly and the Hyde Park Herald with their layout and production needs. This will include working with editorial leadership and the publishing team during print production to collate copy, photos, advertisements, and other relevant elements to design the final editorial product before it goes to print. This is a part-time, 6-month contract role, that may potentially be expanded into a full-time role spanning the organization, serving all of its layout and art direction needs.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work during each paper’s print production, Mondays (Hyde Park Herald) and every other Tuesday (South Side Weekly), sometimes up to 9:00 PM
- Proven proficiency in the Adobe Suite, especially programs like InDesign and Photoshop
- Excellent typography, page layout, visual design, and file-management skills
- Keen understanding of brand consistency and visual standards
- Familiarity with digital asset management, pre-press processes, publication layout, and newspaper production workflows
- Highly organized with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and work with more than one team
- Familiarity or willingness to learn AirTable
Responsibilities:
- Report to the EIC of either publication on print production days (Mondays and every other Tuesday) to assist with laying out the paper, laying out text, headers, and visuals for stories, and addressing edits from EICs
- Coordinate with the Advertising Manager to ensure the accurate placement of advertisements, legal notices, and other important inserts
- Ensure the timely delivery of final proofs to the printer on print production days for each paper
- Participate in efforts, led by editorial staff, to update the layout design of the print papers, by mocking up example layouts and offering input from a design perspective
- Maintain consistent communication via Slack and proactively address challenges with leadership
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a 6-month, part-time contract position that may potentially be expanded into a full-time role. You will be paid for sixteen hours of work per week at $25 per hour, though some weeks may require much less than sixteen hours of work. The position is remote, though occasional meetings may be held in our office at the Experimental Station in Woodlawn.
