Contributing editors are a key part of the Weekly’s week-to-week editorial process. Not assigned to a particular section, they edit all kinds of stories, ranging from arts reviews to investigative features. They also edit these stories at various different levels, from line-editing during Monday production nights to working with writers one-on-one to help turn their story ideas into finished pieces. Additionally, contributing editors will present story pitches and join staff conversations about potential stories and projects.

Anyone interested in improving their editing skills, becoming a part of the Weekly’s editorial process, and getting involved with community journalism should consider applying. As contributing editors gain more experience at the Weekly, they will have theĀ optionĀ to develop a focus or interest in editing more specific topics and types of stories (such as music, or arts, or investigative pieces).

TheĀ day-to-day responsibilitiesĀ consist of editing during Monday evening production nights (3-4 hours, remotely if necessary);Ā working with writers via phone/email throughout the week; and pitching stories every week. The average time commitment is 5-6 hours per week. Production nights take place in our office at the Experimental Station in Woodlawn (6100 S. Blackstone Avenue).
